Armed rob­ber dies af­ter shoot­ing self

A man who shot him­self af­ter al­legedly rob­bing a drug store on Wed­nes­day died Thurs­day morn­ing.

Evan Tyler Erick­son, 32, was pro­nounced dead at 8 a.m.

Ac­cord­ing to Cov­ing­ton Po­lice Capt. Ken Mal­com, Erick­son went into Chip’s Health Mart on Pace Street around 1:15 p.m. Wed­nes­day, bran­dish­ing a hand­gun and de­mand­ing mor­phine. Af­ter be­ing given an undis­closed amount of med­i­ca­tion, he fled.

Of­fi­cers chased Erick­son up Ga. High­way 142 and then to Ga. High­way 81 where he turned south again, be­fore fi­nally turn­ing down J. Roy Dial Road, a dead-end dirt road. He then shot him­self.

He was breath­ing shal­lowly and was taken to Grady Hos­pi­tal, ac­cord­ing to Mal­com.
