Local sports camps, events open for registration
With the summer fast winding down, there are still a few chances to participate and some local camps and sporting events before school starts in August.
Junior golf clinic
Starting Monday, the Newton County Recreation Commission will hold its final summer golf clinic at The Oaks Course for kids ages 6-12. The clinics run Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and are taught by PGA professional Andy Bowman of The Oaks.
The clinics aim to teach youths the fundamentals of golf with an emphasis on golf etiquette and the rules of the game. The coast is $90 and registration includes lunch each day.
Kim Atkins tennis tournament
One of the top charity events in tennis comes once again to Conyers.
The Kim Atkins Memorial Tennis Tournament, voted the US Tennis Association’s 2007, 2010 charity event of the year, will be held Aug. 26-28 at the Rockdale Tennis Center. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Kimberly Chance Atkins Foundation, which was formed in the memory of a wife, mother, teacher, daughter, niece, friend who died after a courageous battle with breast cancer at the age of 32 on Oct. 5, 1999.
The tournament registration is $90 per team if paid by July 31 and $100 per team if paid by Aug. 1-10. The deadline for sponsor registration is July 31 with levels ranging from $150$5,000.
The tournament finals will be held on Sunday, Aug. 28 with a trophy and bag tag given to the champion and finalist of each category. Each entrant will receive a goody bag and Tshirt.

Football registration ends today
Today is the last day to sign up for fall football through the Newton County Recreation Commission. The football program is offered to ages 5-12. and is designed to teach the fundamentals of football while still focusing on fun and good sportsmanship.
Practice begins in August and games begin in September and finish around the end of October with the annual bowl games the first part of November.
The cost is $135 for ages 5-6 and $150 for ages 7-12. Teams will be filled through a draft. You can register online at www.newtonrecreation.com.
