Lo­cal sports camps, events open for reg­is­tra­tion

With the sum­mer fast wind­ing down, there are still a few chances to par­tic­i­pate and some lo­cal camps and sport­ing events be­fore school starts in Au­gust.

Ju­nior golf clinic

Start­ing Mon­day, the New­ton County Re­cre­ation Com­mis­sion will hold its fi­nal sum­mer golf clinic at The Oaks Course for kids ages 6-12. The clin­ics run Mon­day through Thurs­day from 9 a.m. to noon and are taught by PGA pro­fes­sional Andy Bow­man of The Oaks.

The clin­ics aim to teach youths the fun­da­men­tals of golf with an em­pha­sis on golf eti­quette and the rules of the game. The coast is $90 and reg­is­tra­tion in­cludes lunch each day.

Kim Atkins ten­nis tour­na­ment

One of the top char­ity events in ten­nis comes once again to Cony­ers.

The Kim Atkins Me­mo­rial Ten­nis Tour­na­ment, voted the US Ten­nis As­so­ci­a­tion’s 2007, 2010 char­ity event of the year, will be held Aug. 26-28 at the Rock­dale Ten­nis Cen­ter. Pro­ceeds from the tour­na­ment go to the Kim­berly Chance Atkins Foun­da­tion, which was formed in the mem­ory of a wife, mother, teacher, daugh­ter, niece, friend who died af­ter a coura­geous battle with breast cancer at the age of 32 on Oct. 5, 1999.

The tour­na­ment reg­is­tra­tion is $90 per team if paid by July 31 and $100 per team if paid by Aug. 1-10. The dead­line for spon­sor reg­is­tra­tion is July 31 with lev­els rang­ing from $150$5,000.

The tour­na­ment fi­nals will be held on Sun­day, Aug. 28 with a tro­phy and bag tag given to the cham­pion and fi­nal­ist of each cat­e­gory. Each en­trant will re­ceive a goody bag and Tshirt.

Foot­ball reg­is­tra­tion ends to­day

To­day is the last day to sign up for fall foot­ball through the New­ton County Re­cre­ation Com­mis­sion. The foot­ball pro­gram is of­fered to ages 5-12. and is de­signed to teach the fun­da­men­tals of foot­ball while still fo­cus­ing on fun and good sports­man­ship.

Prac­tice be­gins in Au­gust and games be­gin in Septem­ber and fin­ish around the end of Oc­to­ber with the an­nual bowl games the first part of Novem­ber.

The cost is $135 for ages 5-6 and $150 for ages 7-12. Teams will be filled through a draft. You can reg­is­ter on­line at www.new­ton­recre­ation.com.
