One ar­rested in ATM heist

Cov­ing­ton Po­lice have ar­rested an Atlanta man in the theft of the ATM from Es­sex Bank early Wed­nes­day.

Nathan E. Thomas, 44, has been charged with two counts of theft by tak­ing and one count of crim­i­nal dam­age to prop­erty. He is hos­pi­tal­ized with in­juries de­tec­tives be­lieve were sus­tained dur­ing the theft.

Of­fi­cers from the Cov­ing­ton Po­lice Depart­ment found an aban­doned red Dodge Ram truck and a fork­lift in nearby woods. The ATM, stolen from Es­sex Bank on Ga. High­way 142, was in the truck’s bed.

In a press re­lease, Capt. Ken Mal­com said the truck was stolen from a Gwin­nett County lo­ca­tion and the fork­lift from a lo­ca­tion close to the bank.

The in­ves­ti­ga­tion con­tin­ues.

“We be­lieve there are def­i­nitely other peo­ple in­volved in this and we are still work­ing to de­velop leads in or­der to make ad­di­tional ar­rests,” Mal­com said.
