For­mer East­side golfer shows well at Ga. Ama­teur

The Ge­or­gia Col­lege golf pro­gram left its mark on the 90th Ge­or­gia Ama­teur Cham­pi­onship last week­end, as cur­rent, for­mer and fu­ture Bob­cats were all over the leader­board. The group was led by for­mer Bob­cat Carter Collins, who took 13th at seven­over par.

Collins, now a coach at Divi­sion I Ge­or­gia South- ern Univer­sity, was con­sis­tent with rounds of 71, 71, 73 and 72. He fin­ished just three strokes out of the top­five at Chero­kee Town and Coun­try Club in Atlanta.

Ris­ing ju­nior Pa­trick Gar­rett (Ken­ne­saw, Ga.) took 17th at 10-over par. An All-Peach Belt Con­fer­ence (PBC) First Team se­lec­tion in 2011, Gar­rett shot an im­pres­sive four-round 290 on rounds of 71, 72, 72 and 76.

Ris­ing sopho­more Gavin Harper (Twin City, Ga.) took the 50th slot at plus-18, his best round be­ing the sec­ond at a 73. In­com­ing fresh­man David Sullivan (Wood­stock, Ga.) was 59th at plus-20, while ris­ing ju­nior Tay­lor Smith (Mans­field, Ga.) was 64th at plus-22.

Smith is a 2009 grad­u­ate who was a part of East­side's golf team. He qual­i­fied for the U.S. Ama­teur a year ago and made the U.S. Pub­lic Links field this year.
