East Coweta sweeps Newton
The Newton girls’ soccer team continues to struggle, being mercy ruled in its third game of the season.
The Lady Rams fell to East Coweta 10-0 on Tuesday.
“That was one of the games I expected to lose,” Newton coach Nilesh Patel said. They have mercied everybody in the region.”
East Coweta is on a roll as of late winning four of its last five by 10 goals. The other victory was an 8-0 win over Marietta. East Coweta has won eight straight, including anoth- er 10-0 win over Westlake to start the streak.
The Lady Rams were looking to avoid another 10-goal stoppage on Tuesday but fell just shy late in the second half.
“My goal was to last the whole game,” Patel said. “I think we missed it by 11 minutes.”
Newton has had a goalkeeper battle throughout the season, and once again both played against East Coweta.
“Our defense gave it a shot,” Patel said. “We have two good defenders but they can’t control the whole field.”
Newton has six games
left, and Patel hopes the Lady Rams can win at least half.
“Our goal right now is to win at least three or four out of those,” Patel said. “Those are the ones we can win, they’re against similar schools.”
The Newton boys’ team also fell to East Coweta 90 on Tuesday.
It was the second straight loss and third in the last four matches for the Rams (9-3, 4-1).
The Rams have been shutout three times this season, falling 1-0 to Stephenson on March 14 and 3-0 to Newnan March 8.
