Al­covy clinches spot in re­gion

The Al­covy girls’ soc­cer team clinched its first ev­ery Re­gion 3AAAA play­off ap­pear­ance Fri­day night.

The Tigers de­feated Jones County 2-1 to lock up the third spot in their side of the re­gion bracket.

It was the fourth win in five games for Al­covy, which fin­ished with 14 shots against the Grey­hounds.

“We played well, we moved the ball well, con­trolled the tempo of the game and had a lot of op­por­tu­ni­ties to score,” Al­covy coach Phil David­son said. “We man­aged to put enough goals in to win.

“It was a big re­gion win.”

Alex Jor­dan scored both the goals in the sec­ond half for the Tigers (6-3, 3-2).

Al­covy had one of its high­est shoot­ing to­tals of the sea­son.

“We had a lot of more op­por­tu­ni­ties than usual,” David­son said. “We just started re­ally work­ing to­gether as a team and passed the ball bet­ter giv­ing us the op­por­tu­nity to make more shots and score more goals.”

The Tigers are mov­ing the ball around bet­ter than ear­lier in the sea­son when it won just one of its first four.

“They just started re­ally play­ing bet­ter,” David­son said. “We’ve got a tal­ented group of girls who started work­ing bet­ter to­gether and con­trol­ling the ball to­gether.”

Al­covy will play Grif­fin on Tues­day and New­ton Fri­day be­fore go­ing on spring break and then en­ter­ing the re­gion tour­na­ment.

“I’d like to score a few

more goals,” David­son said. “We haven’t been find­ing the back of the net as of­ten as I would like. We’re get­ting more chances so maybe this com­ing week we’ll score more goals.”

In the night­cap of the boys-girls dou­ble­header, Al­covy de­feated Jones County 5-2.

The vic­tory snapped a four game skid for the Al­covy boys’ soc­cer team.
