Jack Day, 84, passed away March 24 in Kermit after a long battle with illness. He was born in 1928 in Covington to Robert Preston and Freddie Ruth (Whelchel) Day. He married his love Mildred Baker in 1950 in Ft. Worth, Texas, and they celebrated 61 years together. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild Brian Day.
Jack was a dedicated family man who adored his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He enjoyed camping and square dancing with the “Shooting Stars.” He served the community as a Boy Scout leader, Little League coach, School Board Member and member of the Board of Trustees for the Methodist Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. He served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Tarawa. He was also a member of the Texas LST Amphibious Association.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Mildred Day of Kermit; sons Robert Day and special friend Becky Woodard of College Station, Texas, John Day and wife Pam of Kermit; daughter Mary Louis and husband Mike of Denver City, Texas; grandchildren Eric Day, Jennifer Eicher and husband Rick, Larenda Gallardo and husband Omar, Heather Webster and special friend James Slayton, and Garrett Louis; and great-grandchildren Zach- ary and Annabelle Eicher, Kohen and Gregory Gallardo, and Johnny and Robert Webster; and family friend Debra Day.
Funeral Services were held 2 p.m., March 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Kermit with the Rev. John Wade officiating. Interment was followed at Kermit Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Day, Robert Day, Mike Louis, Garrett Louis, Eric Day, Omar Gallardo and James Slayton. Honorary Pallbearers were Red Segars, Dude Schlehuber, Zachary Eicher, Annabelle Eicher, Kohen Gallardo, Gregory Gallardo, Johnny Webster and Robert Webster.
