Cov­ing­ton in­mate charged in prison murder, rob­bery

Five prison in­mates, in­clud­ing Cov­ing­ton res­i­dent Dante Ray Myles, have been charged with the murder of fel­low in­mate Lad­er­ick Cor­nel­lius Chap­pel at the Ge­or­gia Di­ag­nos­tic and Clas­si­fi­ca­tion Prison in Jack­son.

Myles, 27, was charged with armed rob­bery and murder along with four other Ge­or­gia in­mates af­ter al­legedly throw­ing Chap­pel off the sec­ond floor of the prison dor­mi­tory.

Chap­pel, 33, was from Al­bany.

“The in­mates were charged as a re­sult of an in­ves­ti­ga­tion con­ducted by agents of the Ge­or­gia Bureau of In­ves­ti­ga­tion Milledgeville Re­gional Of­fice and prison of­fi­cials early Fri­day morn­ing af­ter Chap­pel was thrown to his death from the sec­ond floor of a prison dor­mi­tory. An au­topsy was con­ducted Fri­day morn­ing at the GBI Crime Lab in De­catur in­di­cat­ing Chap­pel died from the blunt force trauma caused by the fall,” ac­cord­ing to a press re­lease.

The other four in­mates charged were: Wil­liam Woodrow Wells, 21, Louisville, Ga.; Niko La­mar

Swann, 23, At­lanta; Demar­cus D. Crew, 19, Elberton, Ga.; Justin O’Neal Clinkscales, 27, Hartwell, Ga.

Myles was ini­tially serv­ing time for a New­ton County con­vic­tion of pos­ses­sion of con­tra­band ar­ti­cles. How­ever, he is no stranger to the le­gal sys­tem.

In 2009, he was charged with ob­struc­tion, cru­elty to chil­dren ter­ror­is­tic threats and ac­tions, ag­gra­vated as­sault and bur­glary out of New­ton County as well.

In 2009, he faced charges from Rock­dale County of ob­struc­tion, pos­ses­sion, mo­tor ve­hi­cle law vi­o­la­tions and a mis­cel­la­neous mis­de­meanor. He has also served time in the past for pos­ses­sion of a firearm by a con­victed felon, theft by re­ceiv­ing and rob­bery.
