Several students from area schools volunteered recently for cheer camp for children with special needs at Johnson Park in Conyers.

Volunteers from Alcovy High School, Eastside High School, Cousins Middle School and Indian Creek Middle School came out to help with cheer camp.

Sponsored by Rockdale Therapeutic Recreation Dept./Rockdale Parks and Recreation, Step in Time Therapy and local high schools, children practiced tumbling, cheers, stunts and dances. Coordinators of the camp were Tom McPike and Mariel Melendez of Rockdale Therapeutic Recreation, Lynda Reagan of Step In Time Therapy and Michelle Evans, Alcovy High School JV cheerleading coach.

“We held this cheer camp because there are so many kids who are interested in cheerleading but there are not any local programs for kids with special needs in this area,” Reagan said in an email.
