Al­covy soft­ball suf­fers first re­gion loss

Al­covy slipped from atop the Re­gion 2-AAAAAA stand­ings Mon­day as it was shutout by Luella 2-0 on its home field.

Both teams were un­beaten in re­gion play head­ing in, and Luella (10-9-1, 4-0) picked up its fourth straight win, while snap­ping a three game streak for the Tigers (20-4-1, 4-1). Al­covy had won 11 of 12 com­ing in, but couldn’t get its bats go­ing against the Lions.

With the loss, the Tigers moved into sec­ond place as one of two teams with one re­gion loss, but de­feated the other, Rock­dale 13-1 on Sept. 6 to se­cure the tiebreaker. Out­done on both of­fense and de­fense, the Tigers couldn’t find their swing against Luella. Though the Tigers tal­lied five hits, their offensive ef­forts just weren’t enough. De­fen­sively, they let one too many balls pass them which in turn al­lowed the Lions to tally up the hits and put run­ners on base.
