Inmate commits suicide
A 51-year-old Newton County inmate reportedly killed himself Wednesday evening.
Curtis Lee Warren had originally been charged with forgery in May and was sentenced to the work-release program on Sept. 14. However, when Warren reported that they did not have his paperwork from the courts yet, he was asked to come back, according to Newton County Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Crum. Neither work release nor his probation officer heard from Warren until Wednesday, at which time there was a warrant for his arrest for probation violation. He was transported to the Newton County Jail around 7 p.m. that night.
Warren was being
booked into the jail and was in a search room alone when he reportedly killed himself. A guard discovered him around 8:30 p.m. Emergen- cy medical care was given and Warren was transported to Newton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Because the death occurred in the jail, GBI has been called in to investigate as a neutral party. According to Crum, agents with the GBI have already done onscene interviews with deten- tion staff and deputies who were there at the time.
