The Newton County Board of Commissioners will hold a reception to honor BOC Chairman Kathy Morgan and commissioners Mort Ewing and Tim Fleming.

A dessert reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18 at the Newton County Historic Courthouse in the boardroom on the third floor.

Morgan, who is the widow of former county chairman Davis Morgan, made history in 2008 as she became the first female county elected chair. She will be replaced by Republican Keith Ellis, who defeated Democrat Marcus Jordan for the seat in November. Morgan lost the primary election to Jordan in the July primary.

Commissioner Ewing, who announced he would not seek re-election with a letter to the board in January, has completed his 12th year as a District 1 commissioner. Former State Sen. Republican John Douglas will replace Ewing. Douglas won the vacated seat against lawyer John Strauss.

Fleming, who was a first-time elected official in 2008, is the son of former District 3 Commissioner Ester Fleming. He made a decision not to seek re-election for the District 5 seat earlier this year. Republican Levie Maddox, who will replace him, beat Democrat Marcello Banes for the position.

All three BOC members will attend their final board meeting for their term in office following the reception.
