U.S. District judge to speak at prayer breakfast
U.S. District Judge Steve C. Jones will be this year’s guest speaker at the annual Legislative Prayer Breakfast beginning at 7 a.m., Jan. 11 at the Turner Lake Complex.
The free event is being hosted by the Covington Kiwanis and Rotary clubs for the third consecutive year and will feature a light breakfast at 7 a.m., in addition to the guest speaker, who will begin after the program starts at 7:30 a.m. The prayer breakfast started as an off-shoot of a weekly men’s prayer group started by local superior court judges and other community leaders.
All local legislators, community leaders and the public are invited to attend.
Judge Jones was sworn in as a district judge on March 4, 2011, and, in his role, presides over cases that involve the United States government, the United States Constitution, federal laws, controversies between citizens of different states and other matters.
He previously served as a superior court judge for Athens-Clarke and Oconee countries from 1995 until 2011. He worked his way up starting out as the director of the Athens Child Support Recovery Unit, then becoming an assistant district attorney and municipal court judge before being named to the superior court.
Jones received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia and is the president of the university’s alumni association, in addition to being an active community volunteer in many other areas.
