U.S. District judge to speak at prayer break­fast

U.S. District Judge Steve C. Jones will be this year’s guest speaker at the an­nual Leg­isla­tive Prayer Break­fast be­gin­ning at 7 a.m., Jan. 11 at the Turner Lake Com­plex.

The free event is be­ing hosted by the Cov­ing­ton Ki­wa­nis and Ro­tary clubs for the third con­sec­u­tive year and will fea­ture a light break­fast at 7 a.m., in ad­di­tion to the guest speaker, who will be­gin af­ter the pro­gram starts at 7:30 a.m. The prayer break­fast started as an off-shoot of a weekly men’s prayer group started by lo­cal su­pe­rior court judges and other com­mu­nity lead­ers.

All lo­cal leg­is­la­tors, com­mu­nity lead­ers and the pub­lic are in­vited to at­tend.

Judge Jones was sworn in as a district judge on March 4, 2011, and, in his role, pre­sides over cases that in­volve the United States government, the United States Con­sti­tu­tion, fed­eral laws, con­tro­ver­sies be­tween ci­ti­zens of dif­fer­ent states and other mat­ters.

He pre­vi­ously served as a su­pe­rior court judge for Athens-Clarke and Oconee coun­tries from 1995 un­til 2011. He worked his way up start­ing out as the di­rec­tor of the Athens Child Sup­port Re­cov­ery Unit, then be­com­ing an as­sis­tant district at­tor­ney and mu­nic­i­pal court judge be­fore be­ing named to the su­pe­rior court.

Jones re­ceived his un­der­grad­u­ate and law de­grees from the Univer­sity of Ge­or­gia and is the pres­i­dent of the univer­sity’s alumni as­so­ci­a­tion, in ad­di­tion to be­ing an ac­tive com­mu­nity vol­un­teer in many other ar­eas.
