Tigers pull off up­set

Al­covy didn’t get off to the start of 2012-13 sea­son it would hope af­ter los­ing its first three and four of its first five games.

But Satur­day, the Tigers picked up their big­gest win of the young sea­son.

Al­covy hosted Class AAAAAA pre-sea­son ranked No. 4 West­lake and came away the vic­tors in a 64-62 win.

It was just the sec­ond loss of the sea­son for West­lake, and its first against a Ge­or­gia team. The Lions only other loss was 57-48

against Ridge­way, Tenn. on Dec. 8.

Der­rius Mathis led the Tigers with 14 points, 10 re­bounds and four steals. Mathis grabbed six of his re­bounds on the of­fen­sive glass, help­ing to con­tinue Al­covy’s pos­ses­sions to push past the Lions.

The Tigers shot just 33 per­cent from the field (21 of 63) but grabbed 12 of its 29 re­bounds on the of­fen­sive end.

Shane Lawrence added 12 points and Justin Wal­lace had four as­sists.

It was Al­covy’s sec­ond win of the sea­son, the other coming from Druid Hills, 69-63 on Dec. 4.

Mathis is lead­ing the Tigers with 11.8 points per game, and Mar­cus Beasley is tal­ly­ing 10 points per con­test.

Mathis is also grab­bing seven re­bounds a con­test and has 16 steals on the sea­son.

West­lake opened the sea­son with seven straight wins be­fore play­ing Ridge­way.

The Lions lost to Class AAAAA run­ner-up Sa­van­nah in the sweet 16 last sea­son.

Al­covy, which reached the elite eight of the Class AAAAA play­offs in 2011-12, trav­els to Charleston, S.C., for the West Ash­ley Hol­i­day Clas­sic Thurs­day through Satur­day.
