County employees and community members visited the Newton County Historic Courthouse on Tuesday afternoon to bid a farewell to outgoing Board of Commissioners Chairman Kathy Morgan and board members Mort Ewing and Tim Fleming. Guests signed good-bye cards, enjoyed desserts and spoke with Morgan, Ewing and Fleming during the casual reception, where they were presented with plaques for their service to the county. Morgan made history in 2008 when she became the first female county elected chair. Commissioner Ewing, who announced he would not seek re-election with a letter to the board in January, has completed his 12th year as a commissioner for District 1. Fleming, who was a first-time elected official in 2008, is the son of former District 3 Commissioner Ester Fleming. He made a decision not to seek re-election for the District 5 seat earlier this year.
