The Cov­ing­ton Y in­spires chil­dren to be healthy

The Y’s mis­sion to be “open to and serv­ing all” in­cludes in­spir­ing our chil­dren to live healthy and fit lives.

As this com­mu­nity’s lead­ing re­source for well­ness, the Cov­ing­ton Y re­al­ized a need to pro­vide a struc­tured ex­er­cise pro­gram for their younger mem­bers. The new Kid’s Fit­ness pro­gram at the Y (Fit Kids) for ages 7-12, pro­vides ex­er­cise in an en­vi­ron­ment that makes fit­ness fun.

Fit Kids is cur­rently of­fered at the Y on Tues­day and Thurs­day evenings at 5:30 p.m. and is in­cluded with a fam­ily mem­ber­ship. Classes ro­tate be­tween Run­ning Club, Yoga Mo­tion, Zum­bat­omic and Ju­nior Ranger Cir­cuit.

Run­ning Club teaches ba­sic run­ning tips and then the kids run to­gether. They are track­ing their miles, work­ing to­ward com­plet­ing a marathon 26.2 miles.

Zum­bat­omic is a Zumba class for kids that of­fers kid-friendly Latin dance rou­tines fo­cus­ing on in­creas­ing self-con­fi­dence, boost­ing me­tab­o­lism and im­prov­ing co­or­di­na­tion.

Yoga Mo­tion is yoga de­signed specif­i­cally for kids. Chil­dren learn the im­por­tance of flex­i­bil­ity while im­prov­ing bal­ance through ba­sic yoga moves re­designed for kids.

Ju­nior Ranger Cir­cuit is a fun ver­sion of boot camp. This class uses body weight ex­er­cises to in­crease strength and stamina.
