Newton Pee Wee teams fall in state tournament
The Newton County Recreation Commission sent two Pee Wee teams to the Dixie Youth State Tournament in Winder this weekend, with both picking up a win but exiting the event early.
The Newton National team lost its first game to Norcross but rebounded later Saturday to defeat Albany International 12-2.
Aiden McGibony struck out 14 batters over five innings, while also driving in five runs offensively in the victory.
“It was a great team effort from patience at the plate by all the players either drawing a walk or getting a big hit,” Newton National coach Shane Allen said.
The National team went on to be eliminated by Albany’s Dixie team 16-0.
While the National team needed a win to stay alive after its first game, the Newton American team started the tournament with a victory, defeating North Gwinnett 13-2 Saturday. Later that day, the Ameri- can team was edged by Buford 8-0 and faced Albany in an elimination game.
Newton American led early, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings, but couldn’t hold on as Albany won 12-11 in the seventh inning.
“We just stopped hitting,” American coach Dennis Lemaster said.
