Mr. Ray­mond Byrd died June 25. He was born in New­ton County in 1929, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Byrd. He was the sev­enth of eight chil­dren and was pre­ceded in death by wife Clau­dia, son Larry, four sis­ters and two broth­ers.

Mr. Byrd was a long- time res­i­dent of New­ton County un­til he moved to DeKalb County in early 2002 to live with his daugh­ter Carolyn. He was a mem­ber of the Com­mu­nity Or­ga­ni­za­tion “Fam­i­lies of Chapel Hill” where he served as vice pres­i­dent. He was a faith­ful em­ployee of Bibb Man­u­fac­tur­ing in Por­terdale. He en­joyed tak­ing walks, spend­ing time with his fam­ily and meet­ing new peo­ple, young or old.

He leaves to cher­ish his mem­o­ries his chil­dren Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Carolyn) Romig of De­catur, the Rev. and Evan­ge­list Wil­lie (Gwen­dolyn) Smith of Cov­ing­ton, Mr. and Mrs. Randy (She­lia) Byrd, of Cov­ing­ton, Mr. and Mrs. Ti­mothy (Tyjuan) Byrd, of Cony­ers; brother Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Leroy (Cora) Byrd; grand­chil­dren Jef­frey, Con­nie, Dion, Ti­mothy Jr. and Shawarner; great-grand­chil­dren Dan­quar­ius, JeNya, Kennedy, Mala­jah, and a host of other rel­a­tives and friends.

Fu­neral ser­vices were held June 29 at Sims Chapel Bap­tist Church with the Rev. Ce­cil J. - ter­ment fol­lowed at Sims Chapel Ceme­tery. Fam­ily and friends acted as pall­bear­ers and
