Dixie Boys back in Cov­ing­ton

An­other sum­mer, an­other Dixie Boys tour­na­ment de­scends on City Pond Park this week­end.

The 13-year-old ju­nior Dixie Boys and 14-year-old Dixie Boys Ge­or­gia state tour­na­ments get started Satur­day, run­ning through Wed­nes­day, if the rain co­op­er­ates.

Both tour­na­ments will run at the same time, on two of City Pond Park’s fields, be­gin­ning at 1 p.m.

The West Ge­or­gia teams get things started, fac­ing Troup County at 1 p.m. in the ju­nior tour­na­ment, while the 14-year-old team faces Columbia County at the same time in the Dixie Boys tour­na­ment.

The host team then takes the field at 4 p.m. in the four-team ju­nior tour­na­ment, play­ing Har­ris County on Field two.

The New­ton County 14-year-old team plays at 7 p.m., tak­ing on Du­luth on Field four. Round­ing out the first round of the eight-team Dixie Boys’ tour­na­ment is Moun­tain Park fac­ing Har­ris County at 4 p.m. and Lawrenceville play­ing Al­bany at 7 p.m. on Field 3.

The Dixie Boys 14-year-old team, rep­re­sent­ing New­ton County, is man­aged by Greg Evans and coached by Mike Blood­worth and Greg Hog­wood.

Tak­ing the field for the Dixie Boys’ team are Austin Bone, Joshua Cam­mon, Dal­ton Cole, Gre­gory Evans, Tyler Hog­wood, Cody Moody,

Austin Parish, Jerry Pike III, Chase Raines, Caleb Sauls, Chan­dler Sweat and Daniel Thomp­son.

The Dixie Boys Ju­nior team is man­aged by David Call­away and coached by John Anglin and Gary Thomp­son.

Play­ers for the 13-yearold team are: Talon Anglin, Daw­son Archer, Zackary Call­away, Lan­don Ham­mond, Corey Hays, Zachary Kin­non, Stone Pat­ter­son, Wil­liams San­ders, Seth Shein­utt, Michael Thomp­son, Robert Thomp­son and Ty­tus Ul­rich.

Last year, New­ton County Parks and Recre­ation hosted the 14-year-old Dixie Boys World Se­ries at City Pond Park Aug. 2-7, with cham­pi­ons from each state of Dixie Boys youth base­ball league de­scend­ing on Cov­ing­ton. The Ge­or­gia team came out on top in 2012, with the West Ge­or­gia team de­feat­ing the host team, New­ton County, 5-2.

The 2013 Dixie Boys World Se­ries will take place Aug. 3-7 at Shaver Com­plex in Seneca, S.C.
