A few months ago the Church Mouse Needlers of Mansfield United Methodist Church began knitting, crocheting and using a loom to make hats for newborns at the Birthcare Center of Newton Medical Center.

When delivering the 40-50 hats monthly, coordinator Kathy Williams mentioned that beginning shortly before Christmas that babies leaving the hospital are dressed in a large, red felt Christmas stockings and that the medical center would need a new supply for 2013. The Needlers immediately volunteered to cut and sew the stockings.

The Center provided two 20-yard bolts of red felt and white felt. Various Needlers have completed the first batch of 43.

Pictured is the youngest Needler, Averi Hilton, and Ruth Kilgore with the 20 stockings they made. Both also make baby hats. Averi’s grandmother, Ginia Powell of Newborn, chose this project to teach Averi how to sew.
