Kayak tour of­fers view of me­te­ors

One of the year’s most im­pres­sive me­teor show­ers, the Per­seid shower, will peak in bril­liance next week­end, and Hard La­bor Creek State Park is of­fer­ing kayak tours of Lake Rut­ledge to en­hance the view­ing ex­pe­ri­ence.

The park will host mul­ti­ple “Pad­dle Un­der the Per­seids” tours Satur­day, Sun­day and Mon­day evenings at the Lake Rut­ledge boat ramp. A park ranger will lead the tour, which costs $20 for those rent­ing mul­ti­per­son kayaks and $10 for those sup­ply­ing their own kayak. Park­ing is $5. Peo­ple must reg­is­ter in ad­vance and spots are limited.

Tours will take place at 10 p.m. Satur­day, Sun­day and Mon­day and at 11:30 p.m. Sun­day and Mon­day.

“This is con­sid­ered by many to be the year's best me­teor shower be­cause the me­te­ors are of­ten bright and leave long trails,” ac­cord­ing to the Ge­or­gia Depart­ment of Nat­u­ral Re­sources’ web­site. The Per­seid shower will yeild around 70 shoot­ing stars an hour this year, ac­cord­ing to an ar­ti­cle in USA To­day.

The peak time to watch the shower will be around 1 a.m., Mon­day, Aug. 12, ac­cord­ing to the ar­ti­cle.
