EHS student charged with murder
The juvenile accused in the shooting death of 19-year-old Quintavian Vanard Johnson Friday night has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The alleged shooter is a 16-year-old Eastside High School student, and he is currently being held at a juvenile detention center. A hearing will be held for a judge to determine whether the teen will face charges as an adult or as a juvenile.
Detectives with the Covington Police Department are still working to determine the motive for the shooting. According to witnesses, the teens were arguing prior to the shooting.
Officers responded to multiple calls of shots being fired in the area of Nixon Circle, located in the Newton County Housing Authority Complex, late Friday night. When they arrived, officers found Johnson dead, lying by a Dumpster, and a second male, Dayneian A. Gibson, with a gunshot wound to the arm.
According to a press release from CPD Captain Ken Malcom, officers were immediately able to make contact with the alleged shooter. According to reports, he was standing nearby when officers arrived, holding a gun, which he dropped, and he raised his hands in surrender.
