EHS stu­dent charged with mur­der

The ju­ve­nile ac­cused in the shoot­ing death of 19-year-old Quin­ta­vian Va­nard John­son Fri­day night has been charged with felony mur­der, ag­gra­vated as­sault and pos­ses­sion of a firearm dur­ing the com­mis­sion of a crime.

The al­leged shooter is a 16-year-old East­side High School stu­dent, and he is cur­rently be­ing held at a ju­ve­nile de­ten­tion cen­ter. A hear­ing will be held for a judge to de­ter­mine whether the teen will face charges as an adult or as a ju­ve­nile.

De­tec­tives with the Cov­ing­ton Po­lice Depart­ment are still work­ing to de­ter­mine the mo­tive for the shoot­ing. Ac­cord­ing to wit­nesses, the teens were ar­gu­ing prior to the shoot­ing.

Of­fi­cers re­sponded to mul­ti­ple calls of shots be­ing fired in the area of Nixon Cir­cle, lo­cated in the New­ton County Hous­ing Au­thor­ity Com­plex, late Fri­day night. When they ar­rived, of­fi­cers found John­son dead, ly­ing by a Dump­ster, and a sec­ond male, Dayneian A. Gib­son, with a gun­shot wound to the arm.

Ac­cord­ing to a press re­lease from CPD Cap­tain Ken Mal­com, of­fi­cers were im­me­di­ately able to make con­tact with the al­leged shooter. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, he was stand­ing nearby when of­fi­cers ar­rived, hold­ing a gun, which he dropped, and he raised his hands in sur­ren­der.
