Parks and Recre­ation opens 2013 sea­son

The New­ton County Recre­ation Com­mis­sion foot­ball sea­son opened the 2013 foot­ball sea­son last night at Turner Lake Foot­ball Field.

New­ton County kicks off full League play tonight, with the Ducks and the Tide and the Auburn Tigers and the LSU Tigers open­ing play at 6 p.m. in Di­vi­sion I and Di­vi­sion II action.

The New­ton County Recre­ation De­part­ment will fea­ture 30 teams be­tween the two leagues this year, fea­tur­ing six Train­ing League teams and 24 League teams that will be split into three di­vi­sions.

Games will be played at Turner Lake Foot­ball Field and Wolver­ine Field through­out the week, with pri­mary Train­ing League games be­ing fea­tured on Mon­days and Thurs­days and League games fea­tured on Tues­days and Satur­days.

The New­ton County Recre­ation Com­mis­sion's foot­ball pro­gram is of­fered to chil­dren ages 5–12.

Play­ers are bro­ken down into four age groups, with 5- to 6-year-olds par­ti­ci­apt­ing in the Train­ing League; 7- to 8-year-olds play­ing in Di­vi­sion I; 9- to 10-yearolds in Di­vi­sion II and 11to 12-year-olds in Di­vi­sion III.

Each player is pro­vided a hel­met, shoul­der pads, a team jersey and a pair of game socks by the Recre­ation Com­mis­sion.

The league will run through late Oc­to­ber, with the Recre­ation Com­mis­sion host­ing its an­nual bowl game in Novem­ber.
