The Newton boys and girls varsity basketball teams started their march through Newton County in impressive fashion, going a combined 4-0 over rivals Alcovy and Eastside in their first matchups against their rivals this year.

Newton swept Alcovy in their season opener, christening Newton's new gym with a pair of victories.

The girls team bested the Lady Tigers 57-34, while the boys program downed Alcovy 68-28, picking up a region victory in its first contest of the year.

Almost a month later, the Rams did it again, sweeping the Eastside Eagles on the road.

The girls program throttled Eastside 61-46, while the boys team needed a late push to down the Eagles 52-49.

“Anytime it’s a county rivalry, emotions are going to be high,” Newton coach Tiffani Johnson said. “But, I think we did a good job pulling the game out.

“It’s about bragging rights in the community,” she said. “There’s lots of back and forth, but it’s a good, friendly rivalry. This is what sports are all about.”

The Eagles will get to take on the Rams at home on Jan. 11, while the Tigers get their second shot at Newton at home on Jan. 24.
