Alcovy softball runs through region

The Covington News - - SPORTS -

The Alcovy Tigers varsity softball team had an opportunity few teams get from season to season — a legitmate chance to repeat as region champions.

Players come and go, often stifling repeat title hopes, but the Tigers stepped up to the plate and took charge in 2013.

Alcovy rolled through its regular season schedule without dropping a region game, setting itself up as the No. 1 seed in the Region 2-AAAAAA Softball Tournament.

The Tigers passed their first two tests of the postseason, getting by Rockdale County and Newton in relatively easy fashion, but Alcovy faced a confident Luella team in the finals that pushed the Tigers to the brink of elimination.

Alcovy dropped its first game to the Lions before besting Luella 4-3 in a comeback victory that was sealed with a Waneisha Morris two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"I was proud of all of them,” Alcovy coach Russell Brock said. “We’ll be a senior-strong team next year ... so (we’ll) look forward to next year.”
