Rams, Tigers make playoff runs

The Newton Rams and Alcovy Tigers took different paths entering the 2013 football season.

The Rams looked for guidance under firstyear head coach Terrance Banks, while the Tigers entered their eighth season under head coach Kirk Hoffman.

In the end, both the Rams and the Tigers reached the postseason while battling throughout the year for the Region 2-AAAAAA championship with Lovejoy.

Newton finished the season with a 5-5 regular season record, but defeated Alcovy 17-14 headto-head to earn the No. 2 playoff seed in the region.

Alcovy, meanwhile, went on to win a school-re- cord-tying seven regular season games and earned the No. 3 postseason seed.

Both teams lost in the opening round, but their runs to the playoffs made the season worth watching.

"We're not given a lot of credit down here," Hoffman said. "We've competed for region championships — a lot of people don't look at that."
