Tigers claim third Newton Cup

The Al­covy Tigers var­sity wrestling team claimed its third Newton Cup in four years this De­cem­ber, breez­ing by Newton and Al­covy by a com­bined score of 99-42.

The Tigers hit the mat against the Rams in the open­ing round of the Newton Cup, de­feat­ing Newton 50-21.

The Tigers opened their con­test against the Rams with five con­sec­u­tive vic­to­ries, tak­ing 11 of the 14 to­tal matches.

The Tigers edged Eastside in the night's ti­tle bout 49-21, best­ing Eastside 9-5 in in­di­vid­ual bouts.

Al­covy sep­a­rated it­self from the Ea­gles with five con­sec­u­tive wins in the mid­dle of the match.

The night was also Se- nior Night for Par­fait Fond­seyuf, Ka­mari Wil­liams and Justin How­ell.

Eastside is the only other pro­gram in the past four years to win the Newton Cup.

"It’s great to win tonight,” Al­covy coach Mike Mostek said.

“Any­time you can be county cham­pi­ons, it’s great for the kids."
