The Social Circle High School wrestling team finished third at the GHSA State Dual Tournament last weekend held at the Macon Coliseum.

The second-seeded Redskins were able to get by Lovett in a rematch of last season’s opening round, but were unable to beat Bremen in the semifinals to advance to the finals against Jefferson.

Jefferson went on to win its 13th straight team state championship by defeating Bremen 48-15.

“We beat Bremen earlier in the season, but I knew it was going to be tough to be able to do it twice in the same year,” Social Circle coach Randy Prater said. “Bremen wrestled well. It was a great match with a lot of lead changes. I am proud of my wrestlers.”

The Redskins were matched up with Lovett on Friday afternoon in the first round of the tournament. The match started off at the 220-weight class, where Lovett won the first three matches at 220, 285 and 106 pounds. The three opening victories gave Lovett a 15-0 lead until Social Circle rallied at 113 pounds, winning all of the remaining 11 weight classes with a final score of 48-15.

In the semifinals Friday night, Social Circle’s Joseph Eidison started out with a 3-2 decision against Bremen at 285 pounds, taking a 3-0 lead. Bremen won by decision at 106 and won in overtime at 113 pounds, taking control of the match 7-3.

The Redskins’ Reid Harris won at 120 in a 12-10 decision to cut the gap to 7-6, but Bremen expanded its lead at 126 pounds to make the score 10-6 in favor of the Blue Devils.

Social Circle’s Ryan Davis recorded a pin to retake the lead 12-7, but Bremen answered with wins at 138 and 147 pounds, taking a 17-12 advantage.

Jeremy Tyson pinned at 170 to give Social Circle its last lead at 24-23.

Bremen pinned at 182 and 195 and Social Circle took a forfeit at 220 to give Bremen a 35-40 final over the Redskins.

Losing to Bremen put the Redskins in the second round of the wrestle backs. Social Circle defeated Spencer 64-9, which moved it to the consolation finals, where the Redskins took third place over Toombs County 4530.

With the state tournament complete, the Redskins turn their attention to their remaining traditional schedule matches leading up to the traditional area tournament, sectional tournament and the state tournament.

Beginning Friday, Social Circle will enter the East Metro Tournament, a two-day event at Loganville High School, before competing at the Jan. 25 Redskin Rumble at SCHS.
