Lady Rams win fourth straight
After a slow starting first half Friday night, the Newton girls varsity basketball team came to life, defeating the Lovejoy Lady Wildcats 50-34.
Deandra Reed led The Lady Rams with 19 points, giving Newton its seventh region win of the season.
“We’re just working toward the postseason,” Newton coach Tiffani Johnson said.
The Lady Rams began the game on a 5-0 run in the first quarter with shots by seniors Sonia Forney and Precious Price. However, those were the only points of the quarter for the Lady Rams, as Lovejoy went on a 6-0 run and ended the first quarter with a 6-5 lead.
It took nearly three minutes into the second quarter for either team to score a point, but Newton broke the ice on a shot by senior Cynteria Langhorne.
The Lady Rams took a 3-point lead on a shot by Price, but the Lady Wildcats responded with buckets of their own.
Lovejoy went on a 7-0 run, and the quick momentum swing came on a shot by Lady Wildcats senior Laquay Marshall. Imani Broadnax made a layup to give Newton two more points in the quar- ter, but the Lady Wildcats held a 17-11 lead at halftime.
“In the first half we were asleep,” Johnson said. “We already thought it was Saturday morning and were supposed to be in the bed, but I woke them up during our halftime talk.”
The Lady Rams came out with intensity in the third quarter and went on a 5-0 run with all five points coming from Forney. However, the Lovejoy responded with its own 5-0 run and capped off the spurt with a 3-pointer from freshman Amber Thornton.
Thornton’s basket was the last bright spot for the Lady Wildcats, as the Lady Rams went on a 9-4 run and ended the third quarter with a 29-28 lead.
The Rams opened the fourth quarter on another 5-0 run with four points coming from Reed. Reed also connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the period, and the Lady Rams cruised to a 16-point win.
“I think she (Reed) finally just relaxed,” Johnson said. “She played a good inside-outside game. She just put it all together today.”
The Lady Rams return to action Friday when they travel to Alcovy to take on their rivals.
