Lady Ea­gles rout Ti­tans

The Lady Ea­gles var­sity basketball team never trailed Satur­day in its non-re­gion con­test against North Oconee, de­feating­ing the vis­it­ing Lady Ti­tans 42-33.

The win was the se­cond in a row for the Lady Ea­gles af­ter de­feat­ing John­son the pre­vi­ous night.

“That was a great win for all of us," East­side coach Matthew Jack­son said. "All of the girls played very, very hard (and) very, very good and I’m proud of all of them."

The Lady Ea­gles came out on a 10-0 run, with six points com­ing from Jy­mara Smith.

The Lady Ti­tans quickly scored five straight points on bas­kets by Kelly Willis and Keller Banks, trim­ming East­side's lead to a sin­gle pos­ses­sion.

De­spite the run, the Lady Ea­gles re­mained in con­trol and went into the se­cond quar­ter with a 13-6 lead af­ter a 3-pointer from Zaria Bar­ton.

Both teams came into the se­cond quar­ter ex­chang­ing buck­ets.

The Lady Ea­gles scored the first points of the quar­ter on a pair of free throws from Rayneisha Clay, but the Lady Ti­tans re­sponded with a jump shot from Ginny Chan­nell.

The Lady Ti­tans quickly went on a 4-0 run, but East­side re­sponded with a 6-0 run and went into half­time with a 24-14 lead.

The Lady Ea­gles be­gan the third quar­ter on a 4-0 run, but the Lady Ti­tans re- sponded with a 4-0 run of their own.

Janelle Cook made a 3-pointer that gave the Lady Ea­gles a 29-18 lead, but The Lady Ti­tans went on a 6-0 run, cut­ting East­side's ad­van­tage to five.

A layup and a pair free throws gave East­side a 33-24 lead go­ing into the fourth quar­ter, end­ing North Oconee's run.

The fourth quar­ter saw both teams ex­change bas­kets. North Oconee scored the first points of the quar­ter on a layup by Chan­nell.

The Lady Ea­gles re­sponded with a 3-pointer by Smith, and the teams con­tin­ued to trade bas­kets, with the Lady Ea­gles even­tu­ally pulling away for the 42-33 win.

The win moved East­side's record to 11-9 for the sea­son, keep­ing the Lady Ea­gles in post­sea­son con­tention.

“Right now, the way that we’re go­ing, the way that we’re play­ing, I like our chances,” Jack­son said.

East­side re­turns to ac­tion Fri­day on the road in re­gion play against Lanier.
