Lady Eagles rout Titans
The Lady Eagles varsity basketball team never trailed Saturday in its non-region contest against North Oconee, defeatinging the visiting Lady Titans 42-33.
The win was the second in a row for the Lady Eagles after defeating Johnson the previous night.
“That was a great win for all of us," Eastside coach Matthew Jackson said. "All of the girls played very, very hard (and) very, very good and I’m proud of all of them."
The Lady Eagles came out on a 10-0 run, with six points coming from Jymara Smith.
The Lady Titans quickly scored five straight points on baskets by Kelly Willis and Keller Banks, trimming Eastside's lead to a single possession.
Despite the run, the Lady Eagles remained in control and went into the second quarter with a 13-6 lead after a 3-pointer from Zaria Barton.
Both teams came into the second quarter exchanging buckets.
The Lady Eagles scored the first points of the quarter on a pair of free throws from Rayneisha Clay, but the Lady Titans responded with a jump shot from Ginny Channell.
The Lady Titans quickly went on a 4-0 run, but Eastside responded with a 6-0 run and went into halftime with a 24-14 lead.
The Lady Eagles began the third quarter on a 4-0 run, but the Lady Titans re- sponded with a 4-0 run of their own.
Janelle Cook made a 3-pointer that gave the Lady Eagles a 29-18 lead, but The Lady Titans went on a 6-0 run, cutting Eastside's advantage to five.
A layup and a pair free throws gave Eastside a 33-24 lead going into the fourth quarter, ending North Oconee's run.
The fourth quarter saw both teams exchange baskets. North Oconee scored the first points of the quarter on a layup by Channell.
The Lady Eagles responded with a 3-pointer by Smith, and the teams continued to trade baskets, with the Lady Eagles eventually pulling away for the 42-33 win.
The win moved Eastside's record to 11-9 for the season, keeping the Lady Eagles in postseason contention.
“Right now, the way that we’re going, the way that we’re playing, I like our chances,” Jackson said.
Eastside returns to action Friday on the road in region play against Lanier.
