One rivalry heats up, other cools

Eastside and Al­covy re­new their rivalry for the sec­ond time this sea­son on Satur­day be­gin­ning at 5 p.m.

The Lady Ea­gles en­ter the early con­test off back-to-back wins over Johns and North Oconee, de­feat­ing the Lady Ti­tans 42-33 in their last con­test Jan. 25.

Al­covy also en­ters on a hot streak, win­ning two of its last three con­tests with vic­to­ries over Druid Hills and Mor­row.

Eastside de­feated the Lady Tigers 51-46 in their first meet­ing this sea­son, lim­it­ing Al­covy to nine points in the open­ing quar- ter as Eastside built up a 12-0 lead. Al­covy bat­tled back, how­ever, tak­ing a 4542 lead with less than three min­utes to go in the game.

The Lady Tigers missed their fi­nal five shots of the game, al­low­ing Eastside to go on a 9-1 run to close the con­test.

Zaria Bar­ton led Eastside with 13 points, while Ayanna Wim­bush paced Al­covy with 22.

The Eastside boys var­sity bas­ket­ball team had an eas­ier time against Al­covy in their first meet­ing this sea­son, tam­ing the Tigers 58-28.

Treyvon Fran­cis scored 13 points in lim­ited ac­tion in the Ea­gles' 30-point win.

The Ea­gles will have a quick turn­around af­ter trav­el­ing to Lanier Fri­day night, but if they can keep the win streak alive on the road, Eastside would en­ter Satur­day's con­test with 13 con­sec­u­tive vic­to­ries. The Ea­gles have not lost since fall­ing to Newton on Dec. 13.

The Tigers are look­ing for trac­tion af­ter drop­ping their last three con­tests.

Al­covy has de­feated just one team this sea­son, pick­ing up a pair of wins over Druid Hills to en­ter Satur­day's game with a 2-18 over­all record.

Game time is set for 5:30 p.m., with the girls con­test be­gin­ning at 4 p.m.

While the Ea­gles and Tigers are set to re­new their rivalry, another lo­cal rivalry clash has been put on hold due to in­clement weather.

Newton and Rock­dale County's sec­ond clash of the sea­son will have to wait just as bit longer, as tonight's reg­u­larly sched­ule match up has been post­poned.

A make up date for the con­test has not yet been set.

The Lady Rams de­feated Rock­dale County 56-45 ear­lier this sea­son, while the Newton Boys came away with a 6549 vic­tory over the Bull­dogs in their first match up this sea­son.

The post­pone­ment is the sec­ond game to be resched­uled for Newton this week.

Newton resched­uled its Tues­day night game with Luella af­ter the game was can­celed due to in­clement weather.

The game has been moved to Satur­day, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m.
