Quick Hits of the Day
Below, you will find some important information regarding anything sports related in the area. This week we have a couple of resignations and Post 77 started off its season with a bang.
Alcovy AD resigns
Gabe Burnette has been with Alcovy High School for two years, but now he is leaving the program to go to Cousins Middle School.
Under Burnette, eight of Alcovy’s sports teams made it to the postseason this past year.
There was turmoil in the basketball program this past season as former head coach Jabari Levi resigned midway through the season. Levi’s resig- nation made him the second coach to leave Alcovy in two seasons, although none of this is Burnette’s fault, as Levi resigned for health reasons.
Kitchens leaves Salem
Salem High School baseball coach Chad Kitchens resigned from Salem to take a coaching/teaching position with Monroe Area High School.
Salem went 10-16 last year including a 5-11 record in the region.
“We had some individuals that did okay last year. We did the best we could in the situation we had,” Kitchens said.
Monroe went just 7-18 this past season, includ- ing its 5-11 record in the region.
The Miami Heat isn’t the only team looking to three-peat and if Rockdale Post 77’s showing on Tuesday says anything, they’re up to the challenge.
In the American Legion season opener, Post 77 posted a 10-2 blowout victory over Peachtree City Post 50.
Some recent graduates made some big plays that led to the win, such as: Shawn Guckenberger, M.J. Boykin, Daniel Croom and Cole Gibson.
Post 77 won back-toback state titles and is off to a good start in terms of winning a third.
