5 Per­sons In­jured Se­ri­ously in Crash

Five per­sons sus­tained se­ri­ous in­juries at 9:38 PM Mon­day when their car left the road trav­el­ing south on High­way 162 ap­prox­i­mately 1.4 miles from Por­terdale.

Ray­mond Hadsway of Por­terdale, was driv­ing his 1964 Buick with four pas­sen­gers when he left the road onto the west shoul­der, slid­ing head on into the cul­vert of a drive­way.

The car then be­came air­borne and col­lided into an­other em­bank­ment of an­other drive­way, cleared the drive­way, and came to rest on the south side of the drive­way, ac­cord­ing the state pa­trol in Madi­son. Ray­mond Hadsway re­ceived skull in­juries and had his teeth knocked out while pas­sen­gers Ronny Qualls, Cony­ers, re­ceived lac­er­a­tions of his lip and eye­brow, ; Deb­bie John­son, 11 Bay Street Por­terdale, re­ceived bro­ken teeth and lac­er­a­tions on her fore­head, Randy Qualls, 3 Peachtree Street Por­terdale, re­ceived lac­er­a­tions of the scalp, and Roy Hadsway, Por­terdale, had face lac­er­a­tions and a bro­ken left leg.

All pas­sen­gers were treated at New­ton County Hospi­tal af­ter be­ing pulled out of their car by the Cov­ing­ton Fire Depart­ment.

Sara M. Jerni­gan re­ceived dam­age of 6150 Ram­sey Drive re­ceived dam­age to the right side and front fen­der of her 1969 Chevro­let Caprice at 9:50 AM Mon­day when she was try­ing to park on the south side of Clark Street and a Demp­ster dump­ster, “hang­ing out over the street ap­prox­i­mately six inches,” scraped the right side of her car, ac­cord­ing to a Cov­ing­ton Po­lice Depart­ment ac­ci­dent re­port.

Kenneth Martin Chas­tain, 18, was charged with not grant­ing the right of way and fol­low­ing too closely at 9:20 AM Tues­day when he tried to pass a 1967 Ford Fal­con driven by Ber­lene Rulo of Ox­ford, who was try­ing to make a left turn into the en­trance of the REA Snap­ping Shoals Elec­tri­cal Corp. on Emory Street.

Mrs. Rulo told po­lice that she had her left sig­nal light on to make the turn and that she had stopped to wait for on­com­ing ve­hi­cles to pass when Chas­tain pulled around her and hit the rear bumper of her car.

Chas­tain told po­lice that he did not see the sig­nal light, but saw that she had stopped and de­cided to pull around her. Chas­tain’s 1967 Mus­tang re­ceived dam­age to the right quar­ter panel.

Donetta Cham­b­liss of the 1228 Emory Street was charged with not grant­ing the right of way at 3:40 PM Tues­day while turn­ing north on High­way 36 at the in­ter­sec­tion of Green Street and mak­ing a left turn into Cov­ing­ton Seafood

Dexie M.R. Mills of Bloom­ing­dale , GA who was also trav­el­ing on High­way 36, said he had to turn off the road to avoid hit­ting Mrs. Cham­b­liss and hit the mailbox of Cov­ing­ton Seafood.

Paul Bell, 2153 Pine For­rest Drive, At­lanta, a pas­sen­ger in Mill’s car, was treated for neck and back in­juries at New­ton County Hospi­tal.

Mills re­ceived dam­age to the un­der­side of his 1972 Oldsmo­bile two-door sedan.
