5 Persons Injured Seriously in Crash
Five persons sustained serious injuries at 9:38 PM Monday when their car left the road traveling south on Highway 162 approximately 1.4 miles from Porterdale.
Raymond Hadsway of Porterdale, was driving his 1964 Buick with four passengers when he left the road onto the west shoulder, sliding head on into the culvert of a driveway.
The car then became airborne and collided into another embankment of another driveway, cleared the driveway, and came to rest on the south side of the driveway, according the state patrol in Madison. Raymond Hadsway received skull injuries and had his teeth knocked out while passengers Ronny Qualls, Conyers, received lacerations of his lip and eyebrow, ; Debbie Johnson, 11 Bay Street Porterdale, received broken teeth and lacerations on her forehead, Randy Qualls, 3 Peachtree Street Porterdale, received lacerations of the scalp, and Roy Hadsway, Porterdale, had face lacerations and a broken left leg.
All passengers were treated at Newton County Hospital after being pulled out of their car by the Covington Fire Department.
Sara M. Jernigan received damage of 6150 Ramsey Drive received damage to the right side and front fender of her 1969 Chevrolet Caprice at 9:50 AM Monday when she was trying to park on the south side of Clark Street and a Dempster dumpster, “hanging out over the street approximately six inches,” scraped the right side of her car, according to a Covington Police Department accident report.
Kenneth Martin Chastain, 18, was charged with not granting the right of way and following too closely at 9:20 AM Tuesday when he tried to pass a 1967 Ford Falcon driven by Berlene Rulo of Oxford, who was trying to make a left turn into the entrance of the REA Snapping Shoals Electrical Corp. on Emory Street.
Mrs. Rulo told police that she had her left signal light on to make the turn and that she had stopped to wait for oncoming vehicles to pass when Chastain pulled around her and hit the rear bumper of her car.
Chastain told police that he did not see the signal light, but saw that she had stopped and decided to pull around her. Chastain’s 1967 Mustang received damage to the right quarter panel.
Donetta Chambliss of the 1228 Emory Street was charged with not granting the right of way at 3:40 PM Tuesday while turning north on Highway 36 at the intersection of Green Street and making a left turn into Covington Seafood
Dexie M.R. Mills of Bloomingdale , GA who was also traveling on Highway 36, said he had to turn off the road to avoid hitting Mrs. Chambliss and hit the mailbox of Covington Seafood.
Paul Bell, 2153 Pine Forrest Drive, Atlanta, a passenger in Mill’s car, was treated for neck and back injuries at Newton County Hospital.
Mills received damage to the underside of his 1972 Oldsmobile two-door sedan.
