Covington Police Explorers, Post #222 excel again
Eighteen of the 26 members of the Covington Police Explorers traveled to Savannah and competed in six events during Summerfest.
Summerfest is an event for Law Enforcement Explorers, ages 14-20, consisting of physical challenges, interactive demonstrations and career competitions. It gives explorers a chance to show their skills while having fun meeting and competing with other Law Enforcement Explorer Posts from throughout the Southern Region.
Summerfest was held at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Complex near Savannah and hosted by the Boy Scouts of America Coastal Georgia Council.
The Covington Police Explorers placed in the following five events: 1st in Warrant Service, 1st in Rapid Dress, 1st in Cell Extraction, 3rd in Uniform Inspection and 3rd in Suspicious Person.
The Covington Police Explorers meet every Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Covington Police Department, and they are taught how to respond and deal with real life situations as police officers do. The explorers are also exposed to team building efforts, fostering leadership skills, building self esteem, building character and learning to be responsible and accountable to themselves and others. The program gives the explorer the tools and training needed to prepare for a career in Law Enforcement.
The Covington Police Explorers are a large component of the successful operation of most community events occurring throughout the year in the City of Covington. A few of the events Explorers assist with: the Fuzz Run, Cheerios challenge, Relay for Life, Christmas Parade, Scare on the Square, Fourth of July Celebration on the Square, etc. During these events the explorers are responsible for traffic control, traffic direction, crowd control and community relations, and they are supervised by officers of the Covington Police Department.
The program is open to high schoolers who maintain good grades, do not have a criminal history and want to pursue a career in law enforcement.
The Covington Police Explorers, post No. 222 is always recruiting new members. If you would like more information about the program and would like to join, contact Post Advisor Officer Allan Seebaran at 770-385-2144.
