The Covington News - - BACK TO SCHOOL -

Dear Newton County School System Family:

It is with great anticipation and excitement that I welcome you to another school year in the Newton County School System. For parents and guardians whose students are entering our schools for the first time, I offer you a special welcome and a heartfelt thank you for the trust that you have placed in us.

Our mission in the Newton County School System is to provide educational excellence for all students. We work hard to make certain every child’s educational experience is rigorous and prepares them to be competitive in our global society; however, we cannot do this work alone — we need your support! As such, I look forward to working closely with you throughout the year. I encourage each of you to get involved with and stay informed about our school system; we provide multiple ways for you to connect to the school system.

We will host two “Education Summits” this school year. Please make plans to attend our first one on Aug. 23 at Newton High School. We will send more information to you regarding this event once we get closer to that date. I encourage you to use your student’s school agenda to communicate as needed with teachers. In addition, please make sure to attend parent/teacher conferences and PTO meetings throughout the school year. To stay informed about our school system, visit our district website, newtoncountyschools.org often; you can also access our schools’ websites through the system site. For those of you who prefer social media, our district and many of our schools have both Facebook and Twitter feeds that are updated daily. Both are truly a great source of information regarding the great things taking place in our school system. You can also follow me on Twitter; my handle is @FuhreySamantha. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up for our electronic news delivery. The sign-up link is posted on our homepage. Make sure you have provided updated phone numbers to our schools as we provide both school and system level news through School Messenger throughout the school year. Your child’s grades can be accessed anytime, day or night, by logging on to our student portal, Infinite Campus. As you can see, there are multiple ways to stay informed and get involved! We recognize our parents are our students’ first teachers. The more involved you are increases your child’s opportunities for success!

Speaking of success, I want to take a moment to congratulate our students and teachers on a very successful 2013-2014 school year. As preliminary test data have been received over the summer, it is clear that our school system is making great strides. Our CRCT scores at the elementary and middle school levels, as well as our EOCT scores at the high school level, increased in several areas last year. Our graduating class of 2014 received millions of dollars in scholarships, and if you check our website and local newspapers, you will see that we reported many student, teacher, employee and district accolades last year — far too many to mention here. I am extremely proud of our progress and successes. We are very fortunate to have a school district in which staff, families and the community come together to support all of our students.

As we start the new school year, we will continue to commit ourselves to providing educational excellence for all students. Whether you are an employee, student, parent, business owner, community leader or resident, you play an important part in the success of the Newton County School System. Should you ever have questions regarding our community’s school system, please do not hesitate to contact me.

In closing, as I enter my second year as your superintendent, I want to thank you for the opportunity to lead this school system. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve our community as we strive to ensure our students are prepared for life beyond high school. I look forward to another exciting year of watching our students learn, achieve, and grow! Welcome back to school! I wish each of you a very successful 2014-2015 school year!

Yours truly, Samantha Fuhrey Superintendent of Newton County Schools
