Our thoughts

Upkeep on the Square

The Covington News - - OPINION -

The downtown Covington Square park along with our iconic courthouse are the center attraction for our strong tourism industry.

Even though the Square park is, in reality, property of Newton County, the city has accepted responsibility to keep it maintained.

Currently renovations and beautification are taking place that should be finished by the first of September, according to city manager Leigh Ann Knight.

We are glad that the city has taken on this responsibility and we support the city’s efforts to improve the Square.

Last week the county of Hancock lost its historic courthouse by fire.

This was a tragic loss of history and will result in the loss of tourism dollars.

It’s our elected official’s responsibility to insure as much as possible that our Square and courthouse are kept in safe and tip-top shape.

Again, we are more than pleased to see that city officials have stepped up to the plate to keep the Square in picturesque shape.
