Cohen’s 68th Anniversary Sale Marks Biggest Event of Year
W. Cohen Company’s 68th Anniversary Sale will start this morning (Thursday) and continue for 10 days, according to a 6-page advertising section in The Covington News today.
The Cohen firm, one of the oldest businesses in the City was founded by Abe Cohen 68 years ago in the sale location as it is today. As Covington and Newton County has grown, Cohen’s has expanded twice taking in the store space behind it and the store adjacent on Monticello Street.
Owner and operator of the store is Leon Cohen, along with his son Phillip. The firm has 25 fulltime and parttime employees. Other than Leon and Phillip Cohen the employees are: Neal Banks, Mrs. Mary Banks, Mrs. Winnie McElroy, Mrs. Ruth Gunnells, Mrs. Vera Garner, Mrs. Claire Ellis, Mrs. Addie Mae King, Mrs. Mary Lou Almand, Mrs. Vennie Nunn, Ernest Darby, Mrs. Nell Bryant, Mrs. Ruth H King, Mrs. Myrna Cason, Miss Brenda Chambers, Miss Gail Hinton, Miss Carol Hayes, Robert Budd, Jimmy Mooney, Julius Johnson, Mrs. Charlotte Adams, Mrs. Fran Elizer, Mrs. Sybil Ellington, Miss Sandra Seabolt and Willie King.
Each year the Cohen Anniversary Sale is the sale of sales for their store. This year the manufacturer’s that Cohen’s buys from have co=operated by making special low prices on items of new fall merchandise in order to make this a really big sale with many special bargains.
