Downtown Covington has become a popular place for events, with various festivals, concerts, parades and gatherings scheduled seemingly every week.

Tuesday, the Covington City Council voted to set up a fee structure for events in the Covington Main Street district.

The fee structure is for single street and Square closures, along with routes for parades/walks/run-a-thons, and is aimed at the city recouping some of its financial cost for public safety officers and trash cleanup.

“It’s not that we’re trying to seek a bunch of money on this,” Councilman Keith Dalton said. “But we want to recoup our cost.”

The events that will be charged fees, starting Jan. 1, would include all of the Main Street district, even extending outside of the Square. Single street road closure with no police — $100 Single street road closure with police — $200 Full square closure with no police — $300 Full square closure with police — $1,000 Parade/Walk/Run-a-thon — $1,000

The new fee structure will also require payment for restrooms after its regular hours of 8 a.m.-8 p.m. for $45.

Any damage to barricades by groups hosting events would also be accessed at $75.

If the event runs longer than four hours, the cost for Public Safety would be $35 per hour for each additional hour more than the four hour minimum. An event requesting power will be charged a $30 fee for use of the electric service.
