Conyers K-9 dies
Conyers K- 9 Zane found dead in his handlers car Thursday
A Conyers Police officer is under investigation after a CPD K-9, Zane, was found deceased in his handler's patrol car Thursday evening.
Zane's handler, Jerahmy Williams, found the K-9 in Williams' vehicle at approximately 5 p.m., at the handler's residence in Rockdale County. Zane had reportedly been forgotten in the vehicle for about 10 hours, according to a CPD spokesperson. Williams had reportedly come home in the morning after his shift and gone inside, feeling sick, and fell asleep. When he woke up for his next shift, he realized Zane was still in the patrol car.
Zane, a 5-year-old Bloodhound, has worked as a tracking dog for Conyers Police Department for four years, three of those with his current handler.
Williams has been with the police department nearly five years and is a patrol Corporal. Williams is cur- rently on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
Rockdale County Sheriff's Office responded to Corporal Williams' residence last night and is currently conducting a separate investigation with the assistance of the Rockdale County District Attorney's Office.
"We are committed to the care and proper treatment of our working K9s. We are mourning the loss of our own," says Police Chief Gene Wilson.
