Ap­point­ments made to po­lice re­view com­mit­tee

Cov­ing­ton coun­cil mem­bers and the mayor made their ap­point­ments to the 21st Cen­tury Polic­ing Ini­tia­tive Com­mit­tee at Mon­day night’s Cov­ing­ton City Coun­cil meet­ing. The ap­point­ments were:

Janet Good­man, for­mer Cov­ing­ton City Coun­cil mem­ber, ap­pointed by Coun­cil Mem­ber Ocie Franklin, Post 3 West; Michael Ge­of­frey, at­tor­ney, ap­pointed by Coun­cil Mem­ber Josh McKelvey, Post 3 East;

The Rev. Dr. Dou­glas Gil­reath, First United Methodist Church, ap­pointed by Coun­cil Mem­ber Christ Smith, Post 1 East;

Pas­tor Gary Thomas, Ju­dah Apos­tolic Church, ap­pointed by Coun­cil Mem­ber Ken­neth Mor­gan, Post 1 West;

Re­tired Of­fi­cer War­ren Gal­lop, ap­pointed by Coun­cil Mem­ber Michael What­ley, Post 2 East;

Pas­tor Ge­orge Lanier, Grace United Methodist Church, ap­pointed by Hawnethia Wil­liams, Post 2, West; and

James John­son, ap­pointed by Mayor Ron­nie John­ston.

Cov­ing­ton Po­lice Chief Stacey Cot­ton will name of­fi­cers to also serve on the board. The com­mit­tee will be a joint ef­fort be­tween the peo­ple ap­pointed and Cot­ton’s ap­pointee. Cot­ton is also work­ing to bring in re­tired law en­force­ment lead­ers to serve as fa­cil­i­ta­tors.

The six ar­eas the pres­i­dent’s re­port cov­ered in­cluded build­ing trust and le­git­i­macy with the com­mu­nity, pol­icy and over­sight, tech­nol­ogy and so­cial me­dia, com­mu­nity polic­ing and crime re­duc­tion, train­ing and education and of­fi­cer well­ness and safety.
