Early runoff vot­ing ends July 22

As of Fri­day af­ter­noon 863 New­ton County res­i­dents have voted in per­son, and an­other 148 sent in ab­sen­tee bal­lots for the 2016 Pri­mary Runoff dur­ing early vot­ing.

Early vot­ing at the New­ton County Ad­min­is­tra­tion Build­ing runs through July 22. Elec­tion Day for the runoff is July 26 at precincts through­out the county.

The elec­tion is county wide due to the Demo­crat can­di­date for county chair be­ing con­tested be­tween Mar­cello Banes and Phil John­son. Dis­trict 43 vot­ers, who cast a Demo­crat bal­lot dur­ing the pri­mary elec­tion on May 24, can vote for ei­ther Tonya An­der­son or Dee Dawkins-Haigler.

Dis­trict 5 of the Board of Com­mis­sion­ers will have an elec­tion de­cided af­ter July 26, due to only Repub­li­cans quali- fy­ing for the elec­tion. Af­ter May’s pri­mary, Ron­nie Cowan and Jared Rut­berg en­tered a runoff.

Vot­ers who cast a Repub­li­can bal­lot in Dis­trict 5 can cast a bal­lot for ei­ther Cowan or Rut­berg in the pri­mary runoff.
