Early vot­ing be­gins Tues­day

Early vot­ing for the 2016 Gen­eral Elec­tion be­gins Mon­day, with in-per­son vot­ing at the New­ton County Ad­min­is­tra­tion Build­ing, 1113 Usher Street, Cov­ing­ton.

Vot­ing at that lo­ca­tion runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon­day through Fri­day. One Satur­day will also be avail­able for early vot­ing at the ad­min­is­tra­tion build­ing, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vot­ers will need to use the side hand­i­cap

en­trance for ad­vance vot­ing at the New­ton County Ad­min­is­tra­tion Build­ing.

New­ton County res­i­dents will also be able to cast an early bal­lot at the Porter Me­mo­rial Branch Li­brary, 6191 High­way 212 Mon­day through Fri­day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The voter reg­is­tra­tion dead­line was Oc­to­ber 11 for those wish­ing to vote in the 2016 Gen­eral Elec­tion, on Nov. 8. Ac­cord­ing to An­gela Man­tle, Di­rec­tor of the New­ton County Board of Elec­tions, 71,059 vot­ers are reg­is­tered in the county. Of those reg­is­tered vot­ers, 58,192 are ac­tive vot­ers and 12,867 are in­ac­tive vot­ers. In­ac­tive vot­ers are those who have not cast a vote in the pre­vi­ous two fed­eral elec­tions.

Dur­ing the March Pres­i­den­tial Pref­er­ence Pri­mary there were 51,295 reg­is­tered ac­tive vot­ers, with 43.18 per­cent vot­ing. Turnout was higher for the most re­cent pres­i­den­tial elec­tion with 74.97 per­cent of the 43,435 ac­tive New­ton County reg­is­tered vot­ers cast­ing a bal­lot.

Ac­cord­ing to New­ton County Board of Elec­tions Di­rec­tor, An­gela Man­tle, vot­ers will need to show a valid state or fed­eral gov­ern­ment is­sued photo iden­ti­fi­ca­tion; a Ge­or­gia’s driver’s li­cense; a valid em­ployee photo iden­ti­fi­ca­tion from any branch, depart­ment, agency or en­tity of the U.S. Gov­ern­ment, Ge­or­gia, county, mu­nic­i­pal­ity, board or au­thor­ity of this state; a valid U.S. pass­port; a valid U.S. Mil­i­tary photo iden­ti­fi­ca­tion; or a valid tribal photo iden­ti­fi­ca­tion.

Elec­tion Day is Tues­day, Nov. 8 and fea­tures sev­eral im­por­tant races on the na­tional, state and lo­cal lev­els, in­clud­ing pres­i­dent, U.S. se­nate and congress, state se­nate and congress, sher­iff and county chair.
