Early voting begins Tuesday
Early voting for the 2016 General Election begins Monday, with in-person voting at the Newton County Administration Building, 1113 Usher Street, Covington.
Voting at that location runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. One Saturday will also be available for early voting at the administration building, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Voters will need to use the side handicap
entrance for advance voting at the Newton County Administration Building.
Newton County residents will also be able to cast an early ballot at the Porter Memorial Branch Library, 6191 Highway 212 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The voter registration deadline was October 11 for those wishing to vote in the 2016 General Election, on Nov. 8. According to Angela Mantle, Director of the Newton County Board of Elections, 71,059 voters are registered in the county. Of those registered voters, 58,192 are active voters and 12,867 are inactive voters. Inactive voters are those who have not cast a vote in the previous two federal elections.
During the March Presidential Preference Primary there were 51,295 registered active voters, with 43.18 percent voting. Turnout was higher for the most recent presidential election with 74.97 percent of the 43,435 active Newton County registered voters casting a ballot.
According to Newton County Board of Elections Director, Angela Mantle, voters will need to show a valid state or federal government issued photo identification; a Georgia’s driver’s license; a valid employee photo identification from any branch, department, agency or entity of the U.S. Government, Georgia, county, municipality, board or authority of this state; a valid U.S. passport; a valid U.S. Military photo identification; or a valid tribal photo identification.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8 and features several important races on the national, state and local levels, including president, U.S. senate and congress, state senate and congress, sheriff and county chair. For information on polling places, visit https:// www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/.
