Tomb of Unknown Soldier guard speaks at DAR program
Herb Smith, a member of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Solider Society, spoke during a program hosted by the Sergeant Newton Chapter, of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution at Merryvale on Oct. 12.
Smith is part of a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization committed to protecting and enhancing the welfare and image of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Tomb) and the soldiers (Tomb Guards) who stand guard, past and present. Their mission is to educate the general public about the Tomb of the United States of America’s unknown war heroes, preserve the history and traditions relating to the Tomb, provide assistance to the Tomb and the current Tomb Guards and their families.
The goal of the society is to make certain individuals that made the ultimate sacrifice of their life for our freedom are not forgotten, and the general public understands this price of freedom.
