Perhaps the highlight of the two-day annual NewRock Track and Field meet at Eastside High this past Wednesday and Thursday was a showdown of sprinters.

Newton junior Elija Godwin energized the crowd with his narrow win over Eastside senior and UGA football signee Eric Stokes in the 100 meters Thursday evening.

Godwin grabbed first place with a time of 10.52 seconds in the 100, edging out Stokes who ran a 10.67 in his first action back on the track with Eastside since coming back from injury. Godwin also found success in the 200, beating out Heritage High’s Anthony Cook with a time of 21.02 seconds.

The Newton boys and girls both had impressive showings, especially on the track events during NewRock. Newton girls newcomer Laniya Rogers swept the 100 and 200 meters just as Godwin did with the boys with times of 12.47 (100m) and 25.57 seconds.

Such events helped both Newton squads to strong finishes overall, as the Lady Rams finished second in the meet to Rockdale County with an overall score of 155.50. Meanwhile, the boys finished third behind Rockdale and Heritage with a cumulative score of 116.
