Pedes­trian killed in Sun­day evening ac­ci­dent

A Cov­ing­ton man was pro­nounced de­ceased af­ter be­ing struck by a car on High­way 278 Sun­day evening.

Around 9:30 p.m., Ge­or­gia State Pa­trol (GSP) re­sponded to re­ports of a pedes­trian be­ing hit. Ac­cord­ing to the GSP traf­fic crash re­port, an Isuzu Trooper SUV was trav­el­ing east on High­way 278 ap­proach­ing the in­ter­sec­tion of Elm Street.

The pedes­trian, iden­ti­fied as Michael Stan­ley Chris­tian, 56, was at­tempt­ing to cross from the north shoul­der of High­way 278 and was in the left turn lane at the time of the ac­ci­dent.

The Isuzu struck the pedes­trian in the turn lane on the right side of his body.

“The pedes­trian then trav­eled ap­prox­i­mately 91 feet be­fore com­ing to rest on the white line be­tween the left turn lane to Elm Street and the left travel lane of Ge­or­gia 12 (High­way 278),” ac­cord­ing to the re­port. “The pedes­trian’s left shoe was ap­prox­i­mately 5 feet in the travel lane of Ge­or­gia 12 (High­way 278) while the right shoe was on the white line in be­tween both lanes.

Chris­tian was trans­ported to Pied­mont New­ton Hospi­tal where he was pro­nounced de­ceased at 10:17 p.m.

Wit­nesses re­port­edly told GSP they saw Chris­tian cross- ing the street from the Ross park­ing lot be­fore he was hit. The Isuzu driver re­port­edly told GSP he was driv­ing down the road when he hit an unknown ob­ject and pulled into a park­ing lot. He then ex­ited his ve­hi­cle and saw some­one lay­ing in the road.
