East­side soc­cer vic­to­ri­ous on Se­nior Night

Both East­side soc­cer squads were win­ners on Se­nior Night Fri­day at Homer Sharp Sta­dium in Cov­ing­ton.

The Lady Ea­gles de­feated Pied­mont Academy 4-0 in Fri­day night’s opener. Mya Cum­mings opened the scor­ing with 6:15 left in the first half. Two goals by Malaya Ya­masaki, the first with 33:35 left and the sec­ond with 5:50 left, plus a beau­ti­ful strike by Madi­son Morvik with only 1:10 re­main­ing stretched the Lady Ea­gles fi­nal to 4-0. The win was Lady Ea­gles coach Joel Sin­gle­ton’s 70th of his ca­reer, an all-time coach­ing record at East­side.

In boys ac­tion, East­side topped Mor­row 2-0 af­ter a score­less first half on a goal by se­nior Cameron Mad­sen with 21:37 left, and a successful penalty kick by se­nior Billy Love with 10:35 re­main­ing in the match.

East­side Coach Champ Young will lead his Ea­gles to the Class AAAA state play­offs for a pro­gram record fourth time, break­ing a tie with for­mer Ea­gle coach Trent Weiser and cur­rent Lady Ea­gle coach Joel Sin­gle­ton who each took 3 teams to state.

The Ea­gles (9-7, 3-3 Re­gion 4AAAA) will be the No. 4 seed from Re­gion 4-AAAA and will face Mary Per­sons (14-2-2, 9-1 Re­gion 2AAAA), the No. 1 seed from Re­gion 2-AAAA, Wed­nes­day in Forsyth in first round ac­tion. The two schools also met in the first round of state in 2011 with the Ea­gles ad­vanc­ing to the sec­ond round for the first time ever with a 2-1 win.
