Hwy. 36/Hen­der­son Mill Road work be­hind sched­ule

The com­ple­tion date for the High­way 36 Hen­der­son Mill Road in­ter­sec­tion is still set for Aug. 31; how­ever the work will not be com­pleted by that time, ac­cord­ing to a state­ment to The Cov­ing­ton News from Ge­or­gia Depart­ment of Trans­porta­tion (Ge­or­gia DOT) District Two Communications Spe­cial­ist Kyle Collins.

“The work will not be com­pleted by the end of Au­gust,” he said. “We don’t have an ac­cu­rate com­ple­tion es­ti­mate at this time.”

The $1.9 mil­lion job went to Knight and As­so­ciates Inc. and they con­tinue to be the prime con­trac­tor.

“They are over 50 per­cent be­hind the an­tic­i­pated progress sched­ule at this stage,” Collins said. “Ge­or­gia DOT pro­ject man­age­ment has worked with all par­ties in­volved to speed up the progress.”

Collins said once the Aug. 31 passes, Knight and As­so­ciates Inc. will be “pe­nal­ized within con­tract pa­ram­e­ters for not hav­ing var­i­ous pay items done.”

“The depart­ment isn’t pleased with the progress or lack thereof and con­tin­ues working at the area, district and state con­struc­tion of­fice level to get things mov­ing,” he said.
