Learn what cops do from those who do it: The Por­terdale Po­lice Depart­ment is tak­ing ap­pli­ca­tions for its sev­enth Cit­i­zens Po­lice Academy. The class starts Aug. 3 and runs eight weeks. The cost is $20. For more in­for­ma­tion, call Cpl. Charles Cook at 770-786-2226.

Tues­day, Aug. 1

The Por­terdale Po­lice Depart­ment (PPD) will par­tic­i­pate in the 2017 Na­tional Night Out Pro­gram this year. PPD will host the event at BC Crow­ell Park on Main Street in Por­terdale be­tween 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The com­mu­nity is in­vited to come out and join PPD for an evening of fun, food and en­ter­tain­ment.

Thurs­day, Aug. 3

The Arts As­so­ci­a­tion in New­ton County will host an open house event for its New­ton County Youth Strings pro­gram at Porter Per­form­ing Arts Cen­ter, at 140 Ram Drive, in Cov­ing­ton, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. New­ton County Youth Strings of­fers vi­o­lin, vi­ola and cello lessons for ages 4 and older.

Fri­day, Aug. 4

New­ton County Recre­ation Com­mis­sion will present a Movie Un­der the Stars at Le­gion Field. Bring a blan­ket or lawn chair and your fam­ily to en­joy a show­ing of “The Sand­lot.” Set up will be­gin at 6 p.m. and the movie will start af­ter dark. Con­ces­sions will be avail­able.

Fri­day, Aug. 4

new Realm will be per­form­ing at Com­mon Grounds Cof­fee House, at 5128 Emory St., in Cov­ing­ton, start­ing at 7 p.m. Come en­joy an acous­tic mu­sic set while drink­ing won­der­ful cof­fee and hang­ing out with friends! This will be a free event, and ev­ery­one of all ages is wel­come.

Get ready for the Youth Em­pow­er­ment So­ci­ety (Y.E.S.) Back to School Bash from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Denny Dobbs Park, at 6244 High­way 212, in Cov­ing­ton. Join the Ride for Roxy Foun­da­tion and Five O’Clock Sports Bar & Grill for an all-day mu­si­cal event with live mu­sic from lo­cal bands and artists, live auc­tion, raf­fles and more to ben­e­fit Don­a­van Jervis. Jervis was in­jured in a mo­tor­cy­cle ac­ci­dent on May 15 and is in the ICU at At­lanta Med­i­cal with­out in­surance.
