Ben­ton House of Cov­ing­ton is spon­sor­ing an Alzheimer’s and De­men­tia Sup­port Group. It will of­fer a sup­port­ive and ed­u­ca­tional gath­er­ing for fam­i­lies and friends whose lives have been im­pacted by Alzheimer’s dis­ease or de­men­tia. Staci Wil­liams who has a Mas­ter’s De­gree in Geron­tol­ogy and Kristi Carter from Lon­gleaf Hospice, who has worked in Se­nior Health­care for many years will co­or­di­nate the group. The group will meet on the sec­ond Mon­day of each month at the Ben­ton House of Cov­ing­ton.

Sun­day, Aug. 13

Salem United Methodist Church, at 3962 Salem Road, in Cov­ing­ton, in­vites all teach­ers (cur­rent and re­tired), as well as sup­port and ad­min­is­tra­tive staff, to a fam­ily night sup­per at 6 p.m.

Wed­nes­day, Aug. 16

The Amer­i­can Red Cross urges blood donors to give in the fi­nal weeks of sum­mer to help over­come a chronic sum­mer blood short­age. In Au­gust, reg­u­lar donors may de­lay giv­ing as fi­nal sum­mer va­ca­tions are planned and back-to-school ac­tiv­i­ties ramp up. To fully meet the needs of hos­pi­tal pa­tients in the com­ing days and weeks, do­na­tions are ur­gently needed from new and cur­rent donors. Those who do­nated blood ear­lier this sum­mer may be el­i­gi­ble to do­nate again. Blood can be safely do­nated ev­ery 56 days, and Power Red cells can be do­nated ev­ery 112 days. St. Au­gus­tine Catholic Church, at 11524 High­way 278 E, in Cov­ing­ton, will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thurs­day, Aug. 17

First Bap­tist Church, at 2100 High­way 138, in Cony­ers, will host the XYZ Or­ga­ni­za­tion for its Au­gust meet­ing. The pro­gram will be the Sound Foun­da­tions from First Bap­tist Church of Avon­dale. Call John­nie at 770-761-7966 to reg­is­ter. Dead­line to reg­is­ter is Aug. 11. Lunch will be $7.

Sat­ur­day, Aug. 26

The City of Cov­ing­ton will part­ner with Trin­ity United Methodist Church, at 6154 Collins St. NE, in Cov­ing­ton, for a com­mu­nity clean up in the Cov­ing­ton Mill com­mu­nity from 8:30 a.m. to ap­prox­i­mately noon. Trin­ity UMC is plan­ning to serve lunch to vol­un­teers and the city will pro­vide wa­ter, gloves and trash bags along with a dump­ster and a claw truck to lift larger items.

Sun­day, Sept. 3

Meet in down­town Cov­ing­ton at 3 p.m. for the Com­mu­nity Bike Ride the first Sun­day of each month. Co-hosted by the New­ton Trails, Main Street Cov­ing­ton and the Cov­ing­ton/New­ton County Vis­i­tors Cen­ter, for more in­for­ma­tion visit http://www.new­ton­trails.org/com­mu­nity-bik­eride. The ride starts and fin­ishes at the Square. The first loop is a gen­tle, fam­ily-friendly 4.5 mile roll around his­toric down­town Cov­ing­ton. Then, if you’re up for a lit­tle more fun, take a ride out and back on the scenic East­side Trail.

Thurs­day, Sept. 21

Con­gress­man Jody Hice presents a job fair at Ge­or­gia Pied­mont Tech­ni­cal Col­lege’s New­ton Cam­pus, at 8100 Bobby Wil­liams Park­way, in Cov­ing­ton, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This job fair is brought in part­ner­ship with the New­ton, Mor­gan, Jasper and Wal­ton Eco­nomic De­vel­op­ment Of­fices and GPTC.
