Waterford — Charles “Chas” F. Willis Sr., 62, of Waterford, husband of Janet L. Haigh, died unexpected­ly Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016.

Born in New London, he was the son of the late Hershall and Elizabeth (Otto) Willis, and lived in Waterford for the past seven years, previously residing in Ledyard and Mystic for most of his life.

He was an operating engineer with Local 478, employed by Tilcon for 15 years. Chas was an accomplish­ed drummer, playing in several bands through the years. He was a member of the Nutmeg Fife and Drum Corps. earlier in life. Inspired by his father H.O. and uncle, Carl Willis (also an operating engineer), he enjoyed farming and operating many types of farm and heavy equipment.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his four sons, Charles “Chas” Jr., Cory, Chris and Chaun; and former wife, Patricia Willis; sister, Betty Henry of Stonington; and brother, Hershall O. “Butch” Willis Jr. and his wife, Maureen, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He was predecease­d by his brother-in-law, Joseph J. Henry Jr.

His family will receive friends and family from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. Funeral services and burial will be private.
